The fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS), held from 7 to 8 July at UN Headquarters, brought together 145 Member State delegations, 46 Ministers or Vice Ministers, and 89 Chiefs of Police and Gendarmerie, making it the largest UNCOPS ever.

The primary theme of the Summit was the future of United Nations Police, including how to:

  • leverage innovation and new technologies to foster a UN Police that is more anticipatory, forward-thinking and gender-responsive to better protect vulnerable populations, UN personnel and the environment;
  • become more agile, targeted and performance-driven to better respond to the changing demands of peace operations; and
  • strengthen police cooperation with Member States and UN partners, including through the Inter-Agency Task Force on Policing, to address complex transnational challenges.

UNCOPS 2026 also offered a unique opportunity for the world’s police executives and United Nations leadership to engage in discussions on how United Nations policing and national policing mutually reinforce one another when addressing current and emerging global security challenges. Police leaders gained a greater understanding of how the skills, knowledge and experience acquired by their national officers returning from United Nations service benefit their own policing services and populations.
