On 7 December, the new Specialised Training Materials (STM) on Child Protection for United Nations police police were launched. The materials were presented by Mark Pedersen of the Integrated Training Service in DPKO/ DFS and discussed subsequently by Alexandre Zouev (Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions, DPKO), Virginia Gamba (Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict), Luis Carrilho (United Nations Police Adviser, DPKO) and Cornelius Williams (Associate Director and Global Chief of Child Protection, UNICEF). The discussion was moderated by David Haeri (Director of the Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training, DPKO). Opening remarks were provided by the German Permanent Representative, Christoph Heusgen.

The training materials have been developed by the Department for Peacekeeping Operations to increase the knowledge of police officers on child protection concerns that may deploy with United Nations police.

Following the launch event for Member States, the training materials will be disseminated to United Nations Member States and Peacekeeping Missions through a series of regional train-the-trainer courses in 2018.

Nine regional train-the-trainer courses are planned for 2018 in Africa, Asia/Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. The target audience will be UN Police child protection focal points from peacekeeping missions and trainers from police contributing countries (PCCs).
