THE ROLE OF UN POLICE IN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS DURING THE COVID19 PANDEMIC & BEYOND

The United Nations Police occupy a unique role among the world’s police with about 11,000 officers from over 90 countries, serving on the frontlines in 14 mission contexts. As first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic, they continue maintaining a physical presence to help host-state authorities maintain law and order, protect civilians, and reassure local populations through patrolling and community-oriented policing.

While fulfilling their mandates, amid the pandemic they are reinforcing national capacities through life-saving awareness-raising, provision of personal protective equipment, and assistance with humanitarian efforts. Beyond direct operational and capacity-building support, the UN Police lay the seeds for lasting peace and development by helping Member States realize effective, efficient, representative, responsive, and accountable police services that serve and protect the population. Guided by the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) and the Sustainable Development Agenda, the UN Police play an increasing role across the peace continuum to advance all of the UN’s security, political, and development objectives. Join UNPOL live on Facebook as we host UN Police Adviser Luís Carrilho for a discussion on the role of the UN Police in peace operations during the pandemic and beyond.
