The United Nations Police occupy a unique role among the world’s police, with about 8,000 officers from over 90 countries serving on the frontlines in 14 United Nations peace operations. They help host-state authorities maintain law and order, protect civilians, prevent and detect crime, and build bridges with local populations through community-oriented policing. As first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have played an increasingly critical role in awareness-raising, the distribution of personal protective equipment, and assistance with humanitarian efforts.
Beyond the direct operational and capacity-building support they provide every day, the UN Police lay the seeds for lasting peace and development by helping Member States realize representative, responsive and accountable police services that serve and protect the population. Guided by the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P), the Sustainable Development Agenda and other frameworks, the United Nations Police work across the peace continuum to advance the UN’s security, political and development objectives.
